Addon-Docs: Prevent source transform from being applied twice on docs pages - #36061
Conversation
…pages When dynamic story snippets are rendered, emitTransformCode applies parameters.docs.source.transform before emitting SNIPPET_RENDERED to the source context. When the docs <Source /> block rendered the snippet, useCode re-applied sourceParameters.transform unconditionally, causing the transform to run twice on docs pages while running only once on the individual story Code tab. Fix: - In Source.tsx: only apply sourceParameters.transform when not already using an emitted snippet, or when explicitly overridden via transformFromProps. - In Source.test.tsx: add unit tests verifying single execution on snippets, prop transform override, and originalSource transform fallback. Fixes storybookjs#35889

…form
- Source.test.tsx: three vi.fn arrow functions used a block comment
(/*transformed*/) as the function body, which evaluates to void and
causes Biome parse errors and makes all transform-called assertions
fail. Replace each with a proper string-returning body that matches
the toBe() assertion at the end of each test case:
- test 1 and 3: (code) => '/*transformed*/ ' + code
- test 2: (code) => '/*prop*/ ' + code
- Source.tsx (useCode): the transformer-selection guard previously
skipped sourceParameters.transform whenever useSnippet && snippet was
truthy. This incorrectly skipped the transform when a raw
serviceSnippet was selected as staticSnippet (serviceSnippet is not
pre-transformed by emitTransformCode). The guard now requires
!serviceSnippet so transforms still apply for raw service snippets.

Thanks for the CodeRabbit review! Both actionable items are fixed in commit b6fe1fe: 1. Source.test.tsx — broken vi.fn mock bodies (parse errors) All three mocks used /comment/ as the arrow-function body, which is a void block comment — not a return value. This caused Biome to report parse errors (Expected a function body, or an expression but instead found ')') and every ransform-called assertion to fail. Each mock now returns a proper string:
2. Source.tsx — service-snippet path skipping transform The transformer guard \useSnippet && snippet ? undefined : sourceParameters.transform\ was incorrectly skipping the transform when a raw \serviceSnippet\ was selected as \staticSnippet. Service snippets are not pre-processed by \emitTransformCode, so they still need the transform. Added !serviceSnippet\ to the guard: \\ s All three tests now exercise correct paths. Thanks again for the detailed review! 🙏 |

Thanks for tracking down #35889, @webdevsamran! The fix is in the right place: every built-in renderer already applies parameters.docs.source.transform before it emits SNIPPET_RENDERED, so the Source block should not apply it a second time.
Result: changes requested. I left one blocking comment on Source.test.tsx and one comment with optional suggestions on Source.tsx. Earlier review comments on this PR that still apply at this head are not repeated here.
- Stages run: architecture and code quality, both on
b6fe1fe. - Not run: runtime verification (stage 3). It starts after the blocking items are fixed.

Thanks for the quick and careful update, @webdevsamran! The renderHook(useSourceProps) rerender tests are exactly what we asked for, and the single sourceKind decision, the new comment and the emitTransformCode.ts note all read well. The earlier test comment is resolved.
Result: changes requested. Your new tests are doing their job: 3 of the 6 fail at this head (vitest run on Source.test.tsx; CI has not run the unit tests on this fork yet).
- 1 failure (
dynamicstory, line 116) comes from the newsourceKindmapping. Details are in the blocking comment onSource.tsx. - 2 failures (
Rendered fewer hooks than expected,Should have a queue) come from the open Codex comment onSource.tsx, which still applies at this head.
With both fixed in a scratch copy, all 6 tests pass and addon-docs:check, oxfmt and oxlint are clean. I also left one optional comment on the test file.
- Stages run: architecture and code quality, both on
e747065. - Not run: runtime verification (stage 3). It starts after the blocking items are fixed.

The two optional suggestions about the test setup from earlier remain optional and are not needed for merge. |

What I did
Fixes #35889
When dynamic story snippets are rendered, emitTransformCode applies parameters.docs.source.transform before emitting SNIPPET_RENDERED to SourceContext.
When the docs block rendered the snippet, useCode re-applied sourceParameters.transform to the already-transformed snippet code, resulting in ransform being executed twice on docs pages while running only once on the individual story page.
